Yes. Formed in 1988 and officially founded in 1993, Michigan School of Traditional Midwifery & Herbology
has become regarded by many as the foremost school of
Traditional Midwifery studies in America, and is the very
first licensed midwifery school in the world to offer a Vocational Arts Diploma in
Traditional Midwifery.
MSTM is officially recognized and licensed by the State of Michigan
Office of Secondary Education and is granted approval to offer a
Vocational Arts Diploma of Midwifery , plus certifications for Traditional Midwifery,
DOULA, Midwife/Labor
Assistant, Childbirth Educator, Certified Herbalist and more.

No. You may enroll from any state in the United States, or Canada or from
any country around the world. MSTM has a global student body!

Can I become NARM certified through this program?
MSTM's Traditional Midwifery program
is designed to meet, and exceed, both the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA), and the North
American Registry of Midwives (NARM) requirements to take the NARM Certified
Professional Midwife exam.
While not all of MSTM's graduates are seeking NARM certification,
the many who have chosen to become a NARM Certified Professional Midwife (CPM)
have successfully done so while enrolled in, or having graduated from,
MSTM's Traditional Midwifery program, and
then completing
the NARM PEP application to become a CPM. Students find that MSTM's Traditional Midwifery
program provides excellent academic preparation for passing the NARM CPM exam.
Students planning to take the NARM exam may wish to sign up for MSTM's NARM
Intensive Preparatory Supplement module, otherwise known as NIPS.
NIPS is designed for students who wish to supplement their
Traditional Midwifery course with extra assignments and academic intensives to help prepare for the
NARM exam. Students must be enrolled in the Traditional Midwifery program and in a qualified
stage of assignment completion to qualify for the NIPS module.

Yes! MSTM established the first academic Honor Society ever
instituted for Midwifery studies.

lauds the accomplishments of students who achieve above average academic
excellence and encourages such student to take a longer view of their
potential contribution to Midwifery. A student's Vocational Arts Diploma in Traditional
Midwifery, and

Where do I get my text books?
The cost of text books is not included in tuition. Each student must
acquire their own books and budget for them accordingly. Recognizing that
books are expensive, MSTM has carefully chosen to recommend
only books which will be of the most benefit
to students. Book costs can exceed $300.00. Students are encouraged to
purchase used texts and take advantage of the tremendous savings used books
offer over new ones.
Internet research may, in part, take the place of textbooks.
A recommend book list is included with the student information packet.
There are no required textbooks.
We do encourage students to purchase their books through the MSTM Book
Store. Sales help us to

What if I need more time to complete my studies?
MSTM’s programs are formatted to be completed within a specific time period.
Each student is given an EDC (estimated date of completion) which is
assessed at the time of enrollment. If a student needs more time to complete
a program, arrangements for course extensions are available for 6 months.
Extensions are assessed a separate fee.
Students are also allotted a free 6 month "leave of absence" in a case of emergency circumstances, which must be applied for and reviewed for approval.
This allows a large measure of flexibility to meet unforeseen life changes or situations.
Students find this provision extremely useful when needed!

Who may attend the Midwifery Skills Workshops & Retreats?
MSTM's Midwifery skills workshops are primarily designed to meet the instruction,
assessment and the practical skills acquisition needs of MSTM Midwifery students, but,
anyone interested in
attending may register and attend MSTM's Midwifery skills workshops.
Due to the difficult
economy and soaring gas prices, attendance at
MSTM's
midwifery
skills workshop is no longer mandatory, and workshops are not help on an annual basis. Traditional Midwifery students may
attend midwifery
workshops
located closer to them. Skills checks may be done with a preceptor.

An apprenticeship is not required to enroll in the Traditional Midwifery
program.
MSTM encourages every student to research and secure an apprenticeship and find
preceptors as needed for actual birth experience and practical skills acquisition. This will be
especially important if you are planning to meet the requirements
for the NARM CPM exam.
It is an important part of the educational process which each student is individually
responsible for.
MSTM assigns each Traditional Midwifery student a Midwifery Academic Mentor (MAM). Midwifery Academic Mentors are former
graduates of MSTM's Traditional Midwifery program who are now practicing midwives.

school in the world to ever explore and initiate the concept of academic mentoring for
Traditional Midwifery students.

This is a school of academic study. As such, MSTM does not offer job placement
services to students or graduates.
Because MSTM graduates are highly motivated self-starters, most have
established themselves in a wide variety of successful
birth related jobs, including independent Midwifery practices, Doula practices,
working in Birth Centers, CPM's practices, speciality home-birth supply companies,
and much more.
